adequate numbers of references, a few thousand years ago, that if you leave a
horse with a big pile of barley it will eat itself to death. Modern horse
breeders think horses are not that stupid.

Almost all of my anecdotes have a larger point.
If you ask a current-day horse owner...I did...you will be told that horses given too much barley will eat themselves to death rapidly.
