It is the thing people put into sentences when they feel the sentence 
could use a break.  As in "To my astonishment, ..."  For your modern 
American audience, the lack of that comma is perfectly stylish.  But 
Victorians would love it!

That makes the complete sentence, "To my astonishment I realized
that that shape AM I!"  Something like that was my *second* guess.  8{D> 
  ... It's as grammatically correct as "I realized that I am that 
shape", and more dramatic.  And the Victorians would probably like the 
extra "that" too.  Not bad.
