Well, I figure when Lord Vigilous was doing his hiring, he had to settle for people who would do whatever he paid them to do without asking any pesky questions. You don't get a superior class of sailors that way, just a bunch of cutthroats and losers who'll slack off and make mistakes as soon as they're away from immediate scrutiny. You could have the best, fastest ship on the seas, but if the crewmen are lacking and you have no real ships' officers to keep them on their toes, your destination is still "deep trouble"
