At first I was going to ask how the Princess can hear *mouse* footsteps.
But no, you're entirely right about that. She's in tune with all
nature, as witness those birds that flocked to her in an early episode.
And this is a children's book, so pirates aren't going to mess with
her in her cell... but the ship's rats might. So she's really concerned
about that. 8{o>
