Err, I'll admit St. Louis is not the place a modern reader expects to 
see in that sentence.  I'd written Chicago in at first, until I found 
I'd given St. Louis the privilege in Mr. Smith's first appearance.  I 
guess my point was, *every* city has its neighborhoods which are so bad 
that surviving them is like being a commando in a jungle, and I've seen 
one or two of St. Louis's.  Besides, Chicago is cliche, even if it 
didn't have such a bad reputation before 1968.
