Both extremes are full of cliché and could go horribly wrong.  I don't need 
to see the kid sucked by himself into a space war, but I also don't need to 
know if he gets a date for Carnaval.  So you might as well just stick to the 
story you want.  I figure you'll find some suitable middle ground.
