     Mind you, in the 1930s, and Irish President was almost as unlikely as a
black President.  The whole Catholic thing (part of what made JFK so
remarkable was, in addition to his age, he was Catholic).  Irish were doing
well on a local level by that point, but really didn't have a shot on the
national stage.
