1. HOW TO USE THIS DOCUMENT

This guide is aimed primarily at persons who currently write or are
interested in writing for the Eightfold Universe. (You can find out
more information about Eightfold by taking a gander at the FAQ, which
is posted on this newsgroup on a monthly basis.)
The information provided here seeks to give an extremely basic
understanding of the various heroes that populate the Eightfold
Universe, listing pertinent information, publication history, and
whether or not they're currently in use, dead, retired, et cetera.
This purpose and this method is inherently limited. While it’s
true that some of the characters listed below are "throw-away" ideas,
generally mentioned in one line or one anecdote, there are many who
are also, in this editor's opinion, far more well-rounded. These
characters are obviously given a short shrift by the "just the facts"
vagaries of a roster. If you're interested in writing for a
character, it's best that you read the actual stories in which they
appeared.
The basic set-up of the entry is as follows:

NAME: The character's super-heroic alias.
REAL NAME: The character's given name, and any other aliases, if they
apply.
STATUS: What he's up to right this very minute: active, dead,
comatose, et cetera. (Mind: the Eightfold Universe isn't obsessed
with stories that happen in the present day. So a dead character
might be a perfectly valid person to write stories about.)
POWERS: A list of any special powers, training, tools, or skills that
mark the character as somehow unique.
PERSONALITY: An extremely brief and snippy reduction that no doubt
does a great disservice both to the characters and their creators.
HISTORY: A necessarily brief summary of any milestones in the
character's life.
CREATOR: The author who created him.
AVAILABILITY: Whether the character is wrapped up in any long-term
storylines or not. You really want to contact the character's creator
if you want to use him or her-- it _is_ a closed universe-- but this
will let you know which characters are currently seeking
representation, so to speak.
APPEARANCES: The actual stories in which they appeared or, as is often
the case, in which they were mentioned, are listed here. They are
covered in more detail in THE WORLD OF EIGHTFOLD resource document.

This document also features a selective index of real names and
aliases to make it easier to find a particular entry. Friends,
allies, and other members of the supporting cast are in the "Allies"
section of this roster. You'll find information on villains in the
VILLAINS ROSTER resource document.
The determination of who fits where is largely a matter of personal
taste. For example, you'll find Erika Fumetti, formerly the
villainous Clockwork Contessa, under "Allies" because of her current
status as a friend of Derek Mason; Carlos Canton and Jack Fisk are not
exactly "friends" of the Green Knight but I don't really consider them
to be villains. Samson Snapp, however, is a villain, despite his lack
of powers or costumed alias. And though Billy Kidman, the star of
Jamie Rosen's TEMPLATE, might seem at first glance to be a better fit
for classification as a "hero" instead of an "ally", his current
decision not to take up his father's mantle makes the "hero" category
somewhat an ill fit.
It's important to note also that the Eightfold Universe is not
strictly a superhero universe. From Jamie Rosen's "The Haunted Man"
series of horror tales and weird western "Six-Gun Judas", to the
Eightfold Romance Group of titles, to the inscrutable adventures of
"Fuchsia Grab-Bag Surprise"-- there's a lot more out there. Those
characters have been not featured in either roster, as their chances
of crossing paths with the various super-folk are doubtful at best.

is incomplete, go ahead and drop Tom a line at: milos_parker @ yahoo .

2. HEROES

NAME: Ark
REAL NAME: Jason Righteous; also known as Connection.
STATUS: Unknown; member of the Nostalgics.
POWERS: Emphatic/telepathic connection with all non-human living
things: animals, plants, diseases, single-cell organisms.
PERSONALITY: A little nuts because of the noise in his head.
HISTORY: Though the why and how have yet to be revealed, he is the
traitor of the Nostalgics. In a relationship with Reilly, a fellow
member whose codename has not yet been revealed.
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
AVAILABILITY: Nope.
APPEARANCES: THE NOSTALGICS # 1-PRESENT

NAME: Bookie
REAL NAME: Unknown.
STATUS: Dead; suicide.
POWERS: None.
PERSONALITY: Unknown; viewed by outsiders as flaky and incompetent.
HISTORY: The Bookie operated as a solo hero out of Vegas in the
eighties. He took on a sidekick, the High Roller, and did not
adequately train or vet him. High Roller became extremely violent
with criminals, and when the Bookie tried to reel him in, the boy went
on his own after the ex-Nazi villain Blue Max. High Roller was
tortured to death. During the ensuing scandal, the Bookie took his
own life.
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
AVAILABILITY: Like the High Roller, he wasn't active for very long--
but anyone wishing to flesh him or the era out a bit is welcome to
try.
APPEARANCES: JOLT CITY # 13

NAME: Blue Boxer
REAL NAME: Derek Mason
STATUS: Active; sidekick to the Green Knight.
POWERS: No powers; not much of an acrobat. Very technologically
inclined, he's supplemented the Green Knight's standards-- gas
pellets, grappling hook, and electric torch-- with several gadgets of
his own design.
PERSONALITY: Angry, stubborn, and seriously-minded. Young.
HISTORY: Formerly a drug dealer working for Samson Snapp, he turned
his life around when the second Green Knight saved his life. Working
secretly with Lt. Danielle Handler, he helped bring down Snapp.
Afterwards, he accepted Martin Rock's offer to become his crime-
fighting partner. As he trained, Derek's father, Moses Mason, was
murdered by serial killer Ellis Banks-- an event which made him grow
up very fast. He took the name Blue Boxer partially as an homage to
the "blue boxes" used by phreakers and also as a nod to his father, a
former prizefighter.
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
AVAILABILITY: Pretty much tied up.
APPEARANCES: JOLT CITY # 2-4, 10-PRESENT

NAME: Captain Phantasm
REAL NAME: Unrevealed.
STATUS: Active; leader of the Seven Wonders.
POWERS: Concussive blasts.
PERSONALITY: Increasingly senile.
HISTORY: Unknown.
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
AVAILABILITY: Sure, go for it.
APPEARANCES: JOURNEY INTO... # 2

NAME: Century Man
REAL NAME: Unrevealed.
STATUS: Deceased.
POWERS: Possessed the Spear of Destiny, which made him immortal as
long as he had it. (He lost it. Its current whereabouts are
unknown.)
PERSONALITY: Chiseled-chin, but forgiving.
HISTORY: Came into possession of the Spear during the 1970s. Fought
the demonically-possessed stripper Jane the Train; married her soon
after. Often visited her brother, the incarcerated villain known as
The All-Mighty Leaf.
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
AVAILABILITY: He-- and the spear-- are pretty much a blank slate.
APPEARANCES: SPEAK! # 3

NAME: Creamy Spatial.
REAL NAME: Unrevealed.
STATUS: Super-Porn Star.
POWERS: Pocket universe inside her vagina.
PERSONALITY: Perky, helpful, somewhat superficial; easily creeped out
by nerdy guys.
HISTORY: Unknown.
CREATOR: Tom Russell
AVAILABILITY: Wide open.
APPEARANCES: THE NOSTALGICS # 2

NAME: Critical Mach
REAL NAME: Unrevealed.
STATUS: Unknown.
POWERS: Speedster.
PERSONALITY: Unknown.
HISTORY: Unknown.
CREATOR: Tom Russell
AVAILABILITY: Wide open.
APPEARANCES: SPEAK! # 4

NAME: Darkhorse (I)
REAL NAME: Phillip Whaley.
STATUS: Retired from heroing; working in the federal government.
POWERS: Formerly a super-speedster.
PERSONALITY: Deeply religious and somewhat cocky.
HISTORY: A follower of Black Islam who believes his super-powers were
a gift from Allah, he lost his powers in battle with Gregory Dingham
and the Gas-Man. He suffered a breakdown as a result. After piecing
himself together, he began working for the President in an undisclosed
capacity.
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
AVAILABILITY: He's there to use. :-)
APPEARANCES: SPEAK! # 7, GREEN KNIGHT # 4, JOURNEY INTO... # 3

NAME: Darkhorse (II)
REAL NAME: Brian Clipper; formerly known as Fleetfeet.
STATUS: Active.
POWERS: Super-speed, complete control of his atoms.
PERSONALITY: Over-confident but also over-competent. A bit odd; a
nudist.
HISTORY: As Fleetfeet, Brian Clipper operated out of Washington
state. When his secret identity was in danger of being discovered, he
faked his death in his superheroic identity. Soon after, he took on
the mantle of his old friend Phillip Whaley, the original Darkhorse.
He had his wife, Daphne, moved to Jolt City-- much to the second Green
Knight's chagrin.
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
AVAILABILITY: There are some vague long-term plans for him, but he's
more-or-less there to use. He's especially conducive, I think, to
that very special sub-set of superhero story in which the character
can solve most problems through his powers and is almost omnipotent.
APPEARANCES: JOURNEY INTO... # 3; JOLT CITY # 4, 9-11, 13, 15

NAME: Doc Quantum
REAL NAME: Unrevealed.
STATUS: Unknown.
POWERS: Unknown, if any.
PERSONALITY: Eccentric scientist.
HISTORY: Often called upon to run scientific-type tests.
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
AVAILABILITY: Wide open.
APPEARANCES: JOURNEY INTO... # 2

NAME: Docrates.
REAL NAME: Docrates, the Mighty Supragato. Known to friends and
owners as Doc.
STATUS: Active.
POWERS: Widely believed to be the most powerful being in the universe;
the heroic housecat counts super-strength, invulnerability, heat
vision, telepathy, telekinesis, extra-dimensional travel, sonic meows
and the creation of nigh-impenetrable hairballs among his many awesome
abilities.
PERSONALITY: Friendly but somewhat skittish. Has a strong aversion to
water.
HISTORY: Pretty much a blank slate. Pet to Julie Ann Justice and the
Human Zeppelin, member in good standing of the Mammal Militia.
CREATOR: Tom Russell. In a rare example of Tuckerization, based on
one of his own cats.
AVAILABILITY: Available. Docrates likely does a lot of team-ups, and
probably works best in that sort of supporting capacity.
APPEARANCES: JOURNEY INTO... # 2-3

NAME: Dr. Metronome (II)
REAL NAME: Katie Morgan.
STATUS: Active.
POWERS: Intangibility. Not actually a doctor.
PERSONALITY: Plucky, responsible.
HISTORY: Talented piano student of the original villainous Dr.
Metronome. When Katie's homicidal mother attempted to kill her, Dr.
Metronome intervened-- ultimately sacrificing his life and killing
Katie's mother. Katie put her piano dreams aside in order to take
care of her two younger siblings; she tries to balance her
responsibilities as a legal guardian with her new role as a heroic Dr.
Metronome.
CREATOR: Tom Russell and Jamie Rosen.
AVAILABILITY: Available, for the moment.
APPEARANCES: JOURNEY INTO... # 1; SPEAK! # 7-9; THE NOSTALGICS # 2

NAME: Fahrenheit Man
REAL NAME: Peter (last name unrevealed).
STATUS: Active; member of the Seven Wonders.
POWERS: Constant heat and fire generation which he cannot control;
flight.
PERSONALITY: Stiff, formal, perhaps a bit lonesome. Catch phrase:
"360 degrees-- the temperature at which EVIL BURNS!!!"
HISTORY: Good friend of the Human Zeppelin. Otherwise, not much
there.
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
AVAILABILITY: Available, and looking for a lady who can withstand 500
degree kisses.
APPEARANCES: JOURNEY INTO... # 2

NAME: Fast-Fwd
REAL NAME: Unrevealed.
STATUS: Unknown.
POWERS: Unknown; presumably a speedster.
PERSONALITY: Idealistic, girl-empowering.
HISTORY: Annoyed by her prattling in a magazine, Gregory Dingham
cursed her with life-threatening weight gain in 2005. What's become
of her since then is unknown.
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
AVAILABILITY: Open.
APPEARANCES: SPEAK! # 4

NAME: Fightin' Jack.
REAL NAME: Jack.
STATUS: Active; member in good standing of the Mammal Militia.
POWERS: Unrevealed, but flight and human speech are among them.
PERSONALITY: He's a bulldog, so it stands to reason that he's a very
friendly and excitable fellow. But nothing much has been established.
HISTORY: Who knows?
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
AVAILABILITY: Wouldn't you like to adopt this lovable fellow-- and the
rest of the Mammal Militia, whoever they may be?
APPEARANCES: JOURNEY INTO... # 2

NAME: Green Knight (I)
REAL NAME: Ray Cradle.
STATUS: Died 2005, cancer.
POWERS: No powers; billionaire inventor with several gadgets,
including grapple-gun, gas pellets, and high-tech armoured suit.
PERSONALITY: Gruff, distant, workaholic.
HISTORY: Became the Green Knight in the late sixties or early
seventies for undisclosed reasons. Took on Martin Rock as his kid
sidekick, the Acro-Bat. Married Ree Cradle and had one son, Anders.
Split with Martin after a heated argument; his wife died of cancer.
Succumbed to cancer himself at the age of sixty-five just after
passing the mantle to Martin, with whom he had partially
reconciled.
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
AVAILABILITY: Tom's open to stories taking place in the past, but
otherwise, dead is dead.
APPEARANCES: GREEN KNIGHT # 1-7; JOLT CITY # 5

NAME: Green Knight (II)
REAL NAME: Martin Rock. Also known as the Acro-Bat and the mask with
no name.
STATUS: Active.
POWERS: No powers; uses considerable gymnastic skill and top-notch
training from the first Green Knight, Ray Cradle, along with a
stripped-down version of his mentor's gear.
PERSONALITY: Conflicted, vaguely self-destructive, gregarious yet not
very social; getting better, slowly.
HISTORY: Became the Green Knight's kid sidekick, the Acro-Bat, at the
age of thirteen, shortly after surviving a sexual assault that
continues to scar him to this day. Joined the marines during the
first Iraq War; had an affair with the Green Knight's wife, Ree
Cradle, before and after the war. In his early thirties, tired of
still playing the kid sidekick as it became obvious Ray would not
relinquish the mantle, he went out on his own, becoming the gritty
vigilante known as the mask with no name for the next ten years. When
Ray Cradle fell ill with cancer, Martin helped to take care of him;
Ray passed the mantle on the night before he died. As the Green
Knight, Martin's made a concerted effort to stand for something,
uniting with Lt. Danielle Handler to take down druglord Samson Snapp.
He's become romantically involved with Handler, as well as bounty
hunter Pam Bierce; he's also recently taken on Derek Mason as his
sidekick, the Blue Boxer.
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
AVAILABILITY: Pretty much tied up for the foreseeable future, but one-
off stories or minis are certainly on the table.
APPEARANCES: GREEN KNIGHT # 1-7, ANNUAL # 1; THE NOSTALGICS # 3; JOLT
CITY # 1-PRESENT

NAME: Happenstance
REAL NAME: Unrevealed.
STATUS: Active solo hero.

PERSONALITY: Ditzy; mostly a cipher.
HISTORY: Unknown.
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
AVAILABILITY: She's little more than a name if anyone wants her.

NAME: High Roller
REAL NAME: Unrevealed.
STATUS: Deceased.
POWERS: Luck and probability manipulation.
PERSONALITY: Chip-on-his-shoulder, aggressive, headstrong.
HISTORY: The inadequately trained sidekick to the Bookie, the High
Roller went after ex-Nazi villain Blue Max on his own and ended up
tortured and murdered. His death resulted in a huge backlash against
sidekicks in the eighties, and his name remains a by-word for those in
the anti-sidekick camp.
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
AVAILABILITY: He didn't have much of a career, but if anyone's
interested in filling some of that in, or in filling in the political
particulars, be my guest.
APPEARANCES: JOLT CITY # 13

NAME: Human Zeppelin
REAL NAME: Max Lang.
STATUS: Active and insanely popular.
POWERS: Can inflate himself at will into a nigh-invulnerable floating
blimp-like state.
PERSONALITY: One sarcastic and bitter, he's become increasingly joyful
about his new life as a celebrity and meme.
HISTORY: The husband of superheroine Julie Ann Justice, he often found
himself playing the part of the damsel in distress. He grew
increasingly tired of being rescued by his wife, or, far worse, their
cat (Docrates, The Mighty Supragato). A mysterious birthday present
granted him his mostly useless power. For reasons that still mystify
him, and perhaps all other sane human beings, he is extremely popular
and has almost single-handed spurred a resurgence in USENET newsgroup
usage.
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
AVAILABILITY: Available.
APPEARANCES: JOURNEY INTO... # 2; THE NOSTALGICS # 3

HISTORY: Son of the first Green Knight. Was somewhat antagonistic
against Martin Rock, his father's sidekick and successor; denied

father, Mr. Rock-- at least let me have his things!" He's mellowed
out since then, but is not generally happy with running his father's
company.
CREATOR: Tom Russell.
