It's a very similar problem to the SMTP submission/transfer intermingling  
(which is why there's now a separate submission protocol & port) - at  
least it avoids the mistake of SMTP/POP-or-IMAP of separating retrieval  
from submission. Now that is a truely bizarre architecture!
