Yeah, caught this later, sorry for adding to the confusion.  An nnrpd
derived from 1.7 works as you describe above, and an nntpd based on ref.
1.5.12 k0dez returns

Me too.  I'll also point a copy of 1.5.12 at a live spool to compare with
some of the other discrepancies you noted.
