this is putting the cart before the horse - INN's architecture
_requires_ that feeder mode be the default; because all feeders talk
to a single process, whereas readers have separate processes each, and
doing it the other way around would have required using
descriptor-passing, with consequent portability problems, rather than
simple inheritance.
