ietf-nntp Multiline Response failure?

Another point that I think is not addressed is when a multiline response
fails in the middle of the response.

Example:  lets say the newsserver is responding to a BODY request and is
sending the lines as it's reading them.  If halfway through the response, a
disk error occurs.  How should a server handle this and what should a reader
check for?

Should it immediately send a ".CRLF" to end the body and then an appropriate
error response (503)?  I'm not clear on what should be done in this case
(what does INN do currently?).
