I always thought that News Hosting should be one of the virtual services offered by an ISP similiar to mail or http so that if I connect to news.virtualhost.com - I would only see the newsgroups that are being hosted by virtualhost.com (versus every newsgroup being hosted by the ISP).
Amoung the other popular protocols - each has a way of virtually hosting:
STMP - via the to address
POP3 - via the login
HTTP - via a header field
I would think that giving the ability for an ISP to host virtual newsgroups will keep and probably increase the popularity of UseNet.
It could be accomplished either by a new command (X-Server or Server) or extending the Mode Reader command to "MODE READER [news servername]". The hosting software would then acknolwedge the command and restrict the visibility (in List/Group/Post/etc commands) to only those newsgroups setup for that server name in some configuration file.
Any opinions?
