Stan,
In section 9.2 you adopted the new response format I proposed. This is a
two column table:
Left column Right column
Code and any description, definition of characters, and
parameters "(multiline)" where appropriate
This format has two benefits: it makes it immediately clear which responses
are multiline, and it makes it obvious that the description is that and not
a string that must be part of the response.
Are you planning to change the rest of the responses ? If not, why not ?
To help you, here are a few:
9.1.1.1.1 responses
211 n f l name group selected (n = estimated number of articles,
f = first article number, l = last article
number, name = name of the group)
411 no such news group
9.1.1.2.1 responses
223 n a article retrieved (n = article number,
a = article id)
412 no news group selected
420 no current article selected
422 no previous article in this group
9.1.1.3.1 responses
223 n a article retrieved (n = article number,
a = article id)
412 no news group selected
420 no current article selected
422 no next article in this group
9.3.1.1 Responses
Responses to initial command:
340 send article (client then sends multiline article)
440 posting not allowed
Responses after the article has been sent:
240 article received okay
441 posting failed
9.3.2.1 Responses
Responses to initial command:
335 send article (client then sends multiline article)
435 article not wanted
Responses after the article has been sent:
235 article received okay
436 transfer failed, try again later
437 article rejected, do not try again
9.4.1.1 Responses
215 list of news group follows (multiline)
9.4.2.1 Responses
215 information follows (multiline)
501 syntax error
503 internal error
[Note that the last two are inconsistent with each other; if LIST
ACTIVE.TIMES can have a syntax error, so can LIST ACTIVE. This is addressed
by my "generic responses" proposal.]
