Agreed, but we now have four options all with nasty properties:

(1) Stick together arguments, losing multiple spaces.
(2) Forbid spaces in wildmats altogether.
(3) Allow \<space> or plain space and break generic command parsers.
(4) Add \s \040, or similar notations.

My preference is (4), but YMMV.
