ietf-nntp Is there going to be an NNTP standard?

I would cordially submit that the process should remain as it has:

1. get the extensions working
2. document them in an informational RFC
3. when widely used, prepare a standards-track RFC

It is, in my judgement, an egregious error to attempt to document a new
protocol before it has been widely deployed and tested.  As with NNTP,
for an immediate example.

Can it be done this way, or has the IETF drifted away from make-it-work-first
design?
