I think I did so at the start of this thread...

Often when I subscribe to a new group (especially if I do so
as a result of hearing of an interesting ongoing thread) I wind
my last fetch date back a day or two to get some articles into
the group.

Equally if I come back from a week or two away I will cut my
feed down to just announce groups and do a fetch so that I get
everything in those groups, then restore the full feed and
windw the date back a day or two to get the last couple of
days news in all the other groups.

There are other reasons but those should be enough for now...
