A list has been created (thankyou to Brad and Clari Net) for those
interested in working towards an update of rfc1036.

The list address is: usenet-format at clari.net

Mail subscribe request to usenet-format-request at clari.net

I have included a Draft Charter for the group below (heavily based on the
nntp group's one). I would guess the first thing would be to get this
charter sorted and then get the group recognised by the IETF.

Please direct all comments to the new list rather than this one.

Simon.

Description of Working Group:

The Standard for Interchange of USENET Messages, defined in RFC 1036,
was released in December 1987. Since that time there has been no official
update published dispute the rapid growth in Usenet and other networks
that use the RFC1036 protocol.

A draft update to rfc1036 was released by Henry Spencer in June 1994 but
this was not further pursued and is now itself out of date.

At the present time an urgent need has been identified to formalize and
document many of the current and proposed extensions to the Usenet
Article format. Many extensions are only vaguely documented and have
competing and overlapping alternatives.

The IETF Usenet Update Working Group shall:

1. Revise and publish a standards-track successor to RFC 1036 that
builds on "Son of 1036" adding and formalizing best
current practice and best proposed practice.

2. ?

Goals and Milestones:

May 97 Identify areas where updates required and write draft
standards for inclusion in the main document.

Jun 97 Produce a revised internet-draft of the Usenet Article
                Standard.

Jun-Oct 97 Produce further drafts as needed.

Nov 97 Submit the revised Usenet Article Standard to the IESG for
                Proposed Standard status
