All this makes me wonder what would happen if the heroes ever decide,
"Y'know, *screw it*! This guy wants to be a god so much, *LET HIM!*
We're just gonna make sure the backlash doesn't kill everyone else!"
and stick to clean-up crew and rescuing innocents.

It just seems that trying to stop an Ascension just causes a lot of
trouble.  Killing the new god afterwards seems easier: just sic the
other gods on him. ;)
