Okay, that makes sense.

New text:

    The line consists of the article number, a space, and then the
    contents of the header or metadata item.  In the case of a header,
    the header name and colon are omitted and, if the colon is followed
    by one or more spaces, the first space is also omitted.

So, using underline to indicate a tab:

    Header                   Output

    Subject: test            123 test
    Subject:   test          123   test
    Subject:_test            123  test
    Subject: _test           123  test
